Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Clinic

Who We Are

We provide a non-invasive, in hospital outpatient treatment offered at VGH.

Who Do We Treat

Our program is intended for mild to moderately depressed individuals. This is a non-pharmaceutical team approach to treating depression. Physician/Psychiatrist referral is required.

What is Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

rTMS involves placing a magnetic coil on a person’s head over a brain region thought to be related to the mental illness being treated. This region is then treated with several trains of magnetic pulses which produces electrical stimulation within the brain without triggering a seizure. The subject is fully conscious during the treatment, which typically lasts around 30 minutes. Typically, a treatment course is administered daily (excluding weekends) for 20 days.

Benefits to the Client

Studies throughout the world have demonstrated rTMS may improve symptoms of clinical depression with fewer side effects than ECT (Electro Convulsive Therapy).

Who Can Participate

Potential subjects who can participate in rTMS treatment include those who:

Factors Which May Exclude a Person from Receiving rTMS

What Is Involved

Once accepted to the treatment program, you will visit the rTMS Clinic daily Monday through Friday for 30-60 minutes for assessment and treatment.
It is safe to drive a vehicle after the treatment, unless a side effect occurs which necessitates staff to recommend not driving temporarily.
